The Elgiva Courtyard

We are investigating a plan to build an extension to the Elgiva Theatre to expand and enhance one of Chesham's most valued community assets.
This exciting design looks carefully at the public face of the theatre, its impact within its existing surroundings, access into the existing and new elements and the way in which different spaces inter-connect and relate to one another.
The new design is designed to be adaptable and have the potential to integrate into any future development of the larger surrounding site, including future potential expansion of The Elgiva, adjacent buildings and access across St. Mary's Way.
New & Improved Public Space: The extension would be built on the footprint of the existing outside patio area, and would be designed to provide a flexible and multipurpose space designed to accommodate a variety of activities.
The ground floor would have the potential to work more effectively as an enhanced theatre bar with multiple access points, and a cafe/restaurant that provides a rich and comfortable environment for users throughout the day and into the evening. An adaptable side room could be used as part of the larger space, as a separate meeting or function room and for pop-up exhibitions and community and corporate events.
The Courtyard Theatre: The first floor creates an innovative 90-seat 'Little Theatre', which would be ideal for use by the numerous community dance and theatre companies across the region. It would allow smaller productions the opportunity to maximise ticket sales and creates scope for additional, larger shows, in the main Theatre. It could also be used to stage live music events, poetry readings and corporate showcases. Seated in the round it benefits from an additional mezzanine level of deating and a skylight roof that brings in natural light for daytime events and rehearsals.
The extension aims to enhance The Elgiva's vision as a hub for the whole community, serving all age groups and people with diverse interests.
We would like to hear the views of residents on these proposals, details of which are also displayed in the lobby of the Town Hall and the foyer of the Elgiva Theatre. Town Council representatives will be promoting opportunities to comment on the plans across town events until the 31st January 2018.
