Christmas in Chesham - Friday 25 November

Christmas Lights by Brian Watts

Chesham’s annual festivities will get underway on Friday 25th November with Christmas in Chesham when the town’s Christmas lights are switched on. The event, sponsored by local business Flying Start Tuition, will get underway in Market Square at 6pm with fabulous carols by the Knights of Harmony (Bucks’ leading male barbershop chorus).

This will be followed by the Winter Parade along the length of the High Street, led by the Amersham Band, our Town Crier, the Mayor Cllr Noel Brown and other local dignitaries, plus the cast of Beauty and the Beast, which is The Elgiva’s pantomime.

The Christmas lights will be switched on at the stage near Sainsbury’s by The Mayor with the help of Paralympic Gold medallists Andy Lewis and Clare Cunningham. Most recently, Andy won Gold in the PT2 paratriathlon at Rio this year. Both Andy and Clare are Sports Ambassadors for the local Arctic One Foundation, which is the Mayor’s charity and helps both able bodied and disabled people get involved in sport.  You can meet Andy and Clare at the Arctic One stall near the War Memorial where you will be able to take photos, get autographs and check out their gold medals!

For the rest of the evening, the stage will feature local musical and dance acts including Elmtree School, Chiltern Music Therapy and the Chesham Bois Catholic Players, organised by Bucks Learning Trust Music. Father Christmas will have parked his sleigh up near the Clock Tower and will be there all evening for children to have their photographs taken with him in the sleigh. And there will be fairground rides, including the Edwardian Gallopers, near Caffé Nero. There will be stalls to explore, including those run by local community groups and charities such as the Chesham Stags, the Dogs Trust and Heritage House School who will be holding all sorts of fun activities from lucky dips to Christmas crafts. There will be lots of food and drinks stalls including fresh paella, German sausages and Greek vegetarian/vegan food. Local businesses will be present, including Auberge du Chocolat, Craft Buddy and The Black Horse and several town centre businesses, such as Colton Footwear, FastBreak Sports and Cox the Saddler will be open late for you to start your Christmas shopping.

Broadway Baptist Church is holding an Indoor Christmas Market and Cafe between 6.30 and 9pm. The cafe will be serving tea, coffee and hot chocolate with mince pies, so you can pop in for a cuppa and have a browse at the stalls in this beautiful, historic building, including Health Tree Uganda and Chesham4Fairtrade.

It’s going to be an amazing night, and the organisers from Chesham Action Partnership would like to thank Flying Start Tuition, the Rotary Club of Chesham, Bucks Learning Trust Music, Sainsbury's Chesham, Chesham Town Council, Chiltern District Council and Chiltern Chamber for their support which makes it all possible. But most importantly the organisers want to invite as many people as possible to come down to the town centre, see the lights and take part in all fun!
