Volunteer Day - 30 September 2017
Chesham Town Hall (HP5 1DS) will be filled with voluntary organisations on Saturday 30th September between 11.30am and 3pm. You can pop in at any point during the event and browse the stalls and chat to people to see what the different organisations do and what volunteering opportunities they have available. There should be something to interest everyone - from health organisations like Cardiomyopathy UK to youth groups such as the Amersham & Chesham Air Cadets. There will be environmental organisations like Chesham in Bloom, heritage organisations such as the Friends of Chesham Cemetery, theatre groups including Theatre Shed and some of the local charity shops, including British Heart Foundation.
Why volunteer? There are probably as many reasons as there are volunteers, but for many it's a chance to give something back to their community, meet new people, develop new skills and have fun. But it's also good for your well-being. A 2012 study by the Royal Voluntary Service found that volunteering in later life decreased depression and social isolation. It also boosts quality of life and helps self-esteem.
On the day, volunteers will be serving homemade cakes along with tea and coffee, with the funds raised going towards the Mayor's charity. Town Mayor, Cllr Emily Culverhouse said, "When I talk to people from local groups and ask them the one thing they really need, the answer is almost always 'more volunteers'. Our Volunteer Day is the perfect opportunity for residents to discover the wide diversity of volunteering roles in Chesham. Please come along on the 30th and see what captures your interest."
