Father Christmas Comes to Chesham!

Father Christmas in Chesham

Father Christmas came to Chesham this week to remind us all that Christmas in Chesham is coming! He and Mrs Claus helped town Mayor, Cllr Emily Culverhouse, to pick the winner of the Christmas in Chesham Early Bird Draw. Each year, the charities that book their Christmas in Chesham stall early are entered into the draw, and the lucky winner gets their pitch for free. This year, the winner was the Chiltern ToyBank, a local initiative that aims to ensure that every Chesham child below the poverty line receives a Christmas gift.

Father Christmas will be back on the evening of Friday 24th November for Christmas in Chesham, when the town’s Christmas lights will be switched on. The evening will start around 6pm and there will be all sorts of stalls down the length of the High Street. Most importantly, come hungry! There will be a great range of food on offer, including paella, pulled pork, muffins and hot chocolate.  Charity stalls, such as Caracol and local scouts groups will be raising money for their good causes with tombolas, games and lucky dips. You can also keep the kids occupied with balloons and light up glow sticks. If you want to start your Christmas shopping, there will be stalls selling Christmas decorations, jewellery, hand-made soaps, clothes, bags and more.

Masons Funfair’s beautiful gallopers are over 100 years old and form the event’s centre piece in The Broadway, along with small fairground rides to delight the kids. Many of the High Street shops get into the spirit with fantastic Christmas window displays and they remain open on the night. Some, like Blue Haze Arts & Crafts, will have even more festive spirit with mulled wine and Christmas cake for visitors!

Father Christmas will be in his sleigh in Market Square and happy to meet children of all ages. This is also where the Winter Parade, led by our Town Crier, Jane Dodd, will start at about 6.30pm and will feature Mayoral Charity Theatre Shed and the colourful cast of The Elgiva’s traditional family pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The procession goes down the length of the High Street to the stage where the Mayor will switch on the Christmas lights. After this, a variety of local musicians and performers, including Halvar, Tuffney Performing Arts and the Panda Players, will showcase their talent on the stage.

Broadway Baptist Church is holding its Indoor Christmas Market and Cafe on the same night, making a fantastic add-on to Christmas in Chesham. The doors to the church will open at 6.30pm. There will be refreshments and Christmas-themed stalls, so do pop in for a warming cuppa and have a browse.

The Christmas in Chesham Team are volunteers supported by Chesham Connect and Chesham Town Council. They would like to thank their sponsor Flying Start Tuition who makes the evening possible, as well as the many organisations, volunteers and businesses that support the night.
